Family Fun at the Country Club - 561-624-5550Golf Lessons

The golf course is often a favorite feature at a country club, and it doesn’t have to be just for the adults. Golf is an excellent family game, and a country club has the golf lessons available to help everyone learn how to hit the ball and improve their swing. If the old adage is true that the family that plays together stays together, golf is a great way to be a tight-knit group. Golfing lasts from two to four hours, on average.

Some of the great lessons in life can be learned on the golf course. Honesty, good etiquette, discipline, patience, overcoming challenges, and respecting the environment are all lessons that can be learned as family members golf together. A bonus is that everyone is outside getting exercise.

Tennis

Tennis is suitable for all ages and all skill levels. This is a fast-moving non-impact sport that can be fun for the entire family to share in together. While having fun, strengthening relationships, and learning good sportsmanship, everyone can gain health benefits, including the following:

  • Increased aerobic capacity

  • Increased reaction time
  • Improved metabolic function
  • Lowering the resting heart rate and blood pressure

Everyone in the family can also learn about preventing injuries while enjoying friendly competition. A few tips for avoiding being injured while playing tennis follow:

  • Before going on the court, warm up the joints and muscles by stretching.
  • Maintain a fitness level adequate for the time spent on the court.
  • Play tennis at a level that is appropriate for your age and physical condition.
  • Avoid playing on a slippery surface.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Be aware that too much repetition of strokes can lead to repetition injuries. By playing the volume of tennis appropriate to your level of fitness, you can avoid injuries.

Country clubs have skilled tennis players available for tennis lessons. The experts can help a family learn how to play together while understanding that each individual should play only to the level appropriate for them.

Swimming

Swimming is great fun for everyone, making it the ideal family activity. As members of a country club, you can swim with friends and family for fun while getting low-impact exercise. It’s good for parents to swim with their children for a variety of reasons.

  • You can help get small children accustomed to the water.
  • Learn whether children are interested in or ready for swim lessons.
  • Children who are already swimmers can hone and practice their skill.
  • Swimming is just one more excellent way for family members to spend quality time together at a country club.

Dining

After participating in fun activities, it’s great for family and friends to dine together. A country club typically has talented chefs who provide something on the menu for everyone to enjoy.

The 2016-2017 championship golf season is well underway, but many of the top ranked events are still ahead. The following are the three top-rated major golf championships, and the number one event happens to be next on the calendar.

Top 3 Major Golf Championships - 561-624-5550

Considerations in Ranking Major Golf Championships

Championship golfers were surveyed and provided their answers to numerous questions for the purpose of ranking golf championship events. The results of the survey provided the answer to the question: What are the top rated major golf championships of the 2016-2017 season? Those surveyed provided feedback on the following categories and more to arrive at ranking order:

  • Prize money
  • Strength of field
  • History
  • Tradition
  • Quality of the course
  • Cleanliness of courtesy cars
  • Social media presence

Ranked No. 1 – April 6-9, 2017 – The Masters Tournament

The golf championship preferred most by a double-digit margin, compared to the second in ranking, is The Masters Tournament to be held April 6-9, 2017. This most coveted major golf event is, of course, held in Augusta, Georgia, at the Augusta National Golf Club. This extremely well-organized and well-managed event is held at the immaculate course most closely associated with the late great Bobby Jones. Although on the list of championship events, it is more correct to call it an invitational, in keeping with Jones’ ardent wishes. The green jacket is one among many features that make this the number one event for top golfers, year after year.

Ranked No. 2 – July 20-23, 2017 – The Open Championship

The Open Championship, also referred to as the British Open, will be held on July 20-23, 2017, at Royal Birkdale. The Open is the oldest of the four major professional golf championships, the other three being the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Fourteen different courses have hosted The Open, and Royal Birkdale is hosting for the tenth time. Located 20 miles north of Liverpool, England, Royal Birkdale is situated on a scenic stretch of beautiful linksland. Features of this tournament that make it a standout among players and fans include quirky links golf, trajectory control in high winds, ground game options, and cool hats. History is also a draw. The course was first established in 1889 and first hosted The Open in 1954.

Ranked No. 3 – June 15-18, 2017 – U.S. Open

Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, is a first-time host of the U.S. Open, which has traditionally ranked above The British Open. Recent course choices, setups, and controversial rulings have had their effect on this top golf championship. Length is a major part of the challenge at Erin Hills, which may be the longest course in the history of the U.S. Open. Characteristics of U.S. Open play include tight scoring, high cut or “open rough,” and undulating greens. The first-ever U.S. Open was a one-day event on October 4, 1895, in Newport, Rhode Island, at the Newport Country Club. The winner’s share of the purse at the 2016 U.S. Open was $1.8 million. Winning the U.S Open paves the way for several rare privileges, one of which is a much more secure career and solid standing as an elite player.

The top three golf championships are can’t-miss events, but there are also many more that golfers can look forward to this year. The Ironhorse Country Club golf course is a great place to hone skills, for anyone dreaming of being an elite championship golfer.

Historical Value

Old Course at St. Andrews Links in Scotland is the birthplace of golf and the world’s oldest course. Since the early 15th century, people have played on the land. There was a period, however, during which golfing was banned by King James of Scotland because it was disruptive to the focus on archery. There are numerous landmarks and famous features of Old Course, including 700-year-old Swilcan Bridge, which stretches between the 1st and 18th holes.

Exclusivity

You’ve set your sights high, if you are looking to play one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world. These are places even the greats, such as Jack Nicklaus, might be turned away. Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, is home of The Masters. Though the entire world is welcome for four days every year for this infamous tournament, it retreats into anonymity for virtually the entire remainder of the time. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, was not allowed to become a member for years because the man publically stated his desire to join. Eventually, he got in. Maybe you could, too.

Beauty

Pebble Beach Golf Links was the only entry to be unanimously chosen in a prestigious World’s Most Beautiful Golf Courses vote. Fortunately for golf lovers everywhere, this is a public golf course. You can stand where golf history was made at every hole. Some of the most prestigious tournaments have been held at Pebble Beach Golf Links, including five U.S. Open Championships, with the sixth scheduled for 2019. It is also home to the annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Difficulty

The Oakmont Country Club golf course was designed by Henry Fownes, and his goal in its creation was: pain. The course has been around for a century, and it is still widely considered the most punishing golf course in the United States. Some of the best golfers in the game have had double bogies at Oakmont. Two features that make it a grueling course are: Rough that you can get tangled in and greens that are wicked tough and at the same time magnificent.

Uniqueness

Brickyard Crossing Golf Course is as unique as golf courses come. It was built by famed golf course architect Pete Dye, and it encompasses a racetrack at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On this public course, which is open every day of the week, there are 4 holes inside the oval race track and 14 holes adjacent to the racetrack on the backstretch. Even pricing is sometimes unique. During a “Pay the Temperature” promotion, green fees cost whatever the air temperature was at the time players arrived. The course has hosted the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and other events. It has also received numerous distinctions, including being named one of the 12 Best Value Golf Courses in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine.

These are five bucket-list-worthy golf courses. The great news is that there are many hundreds more that you might choose as a destination golf course while you’re still alive and swinging.

Palm Beach Country Club Golf Etiquette

Practicing good Palm Beach Country Club golf etiquette is what good golfers do. Unfortunately, many low-handicap players habitually ignore these basic rules. Golf course maintenance is more or less expensive, depending on the conduct of players. Many quality golf courses have fallen into rapid decline as a direct result of costs associated with carelessness on the part of players. Everyone benefits from the steadfast conduct of good golfers. So, the big question is: How to be a good golfer, regardless of handicap? The following are some basic rules of golf course etiquette.

Palm Beach Country Club - 561-624-5550Divots

Of course, a divot is a piece of turf cut out of the ground by the stroke of a golf club. A typical question golfers ask is whether divots should be replaced. The best option is to fill the divot hole with material provided by maintenance staff, which is usually sand. If the divot has plenty of soil attached, it also makes sense to replace it. The divot dries out quickly, if there is no soil; and during the next mowing, it will be pulled out of the ground.

Bunkers

The first rule in etiquette taught to many players new to golf is to rake sand traps or bunkers, repairing divots and smoothing footprints. It is a real discourtesy to other golfers, to neglect this task. Not only does the sand need to be raked, but it needs to be done correctly, so that the shallow sand is distributed as evenly as possible. Also, always enter and exit a bunker from the low side, rather than trying to climb out, which causes damage to bunker liners and the bordering grass.

Ball Marks

Poor ball mark repair is a common point of debate, as regards golfing etiquette. There are even disagreements among golf course superintendents, as far as the best way to restore smoothness after removing a ball mark. However, it is generally agreed that gently pushing from the sides and, as needed, gently lifting a compressed area is the best practice. Never twist the grass aggressively.

Golf Carts

Improper use of golf carts is the number one cause of damage to a golf course. To prevent damage: never drive too close to greens; stay on golf paths; pay heed to painted lines, signs, and ropes; avoid wet areas; and don’t drive on the banks of tees.

More Golf Etiquette Tips

Practicing good Palm Beach Country Club golf etiquette, regardless of handicap should be the goal of every player. Every missed step can mean additional expense for golf course maintenance and diminished enjoyment of the game among other golfers. The little things count, including the following:

  • If a rope stake or sign has been knocked down, replace it. This helps to prevent damage to the course and keeps it looking neat.
  • Do not overfill trash containers because doing so can result in waste blowing across the golf course.
  • Broken tees can cause costly damage to mower reels; pick them up and properly dispose of them.
  • Place bunker rakes where they belong.
  • Avoid making divots when practicing your swing.
  • Avoid driving your cart directly behind other carts.

Your behavior as a good golfer will serve as an example others will follow. Leaving the golf course better than you found it also means you can look forward to continued enjoyment at your favorite courses or at the golf course you’re a member of. As a member of a golf course such as Ironhorse Country Club, you are also helping to protect your interests and the interests of fellow members, when you practice good golf etiquette.

Utilizing the Top 4 Fundamental Golfing Tips

Golf is a gentleman’s game, but it can be difficult to act like a gentleman when your golf swing routinely inspires a volcanic release of swear words. There is much to love about golf. Feeling like a hacker or actually being one, however, can be downright discouraging. It’s absolutely possible to nail down fundamentals that will improve your swing. The following are basics that can save your golf clubs from being snapped in two after one bad swing too many. The top 4 golfing tips are for right-handers and should be done in an opposite manner for left-handers.

Jupiter Island Country Club Golfing Tips - 561-624-5550

Hold the golf club correctly

Duplicate the natural position of your hands when they are hanging at your side, as you grasp the club. Lightly hold the club with your left hand, with thumb pointing down. The knuckles of your index and middle fingers should be easily visible. Between your thumb and index finger, the “V” should point toward your rear shoulder (not your chin). Maintain the neutral position as you place your right hand below the left.

Correctly grip the golf club

Control of your swing begins with the grip. There are three basic grips on a golf club:

  • The interlocking grip is the most common for people with smaller hands, weak wrists, or less powerful forearms. Literally lock the hands together, with the pinkie finger of the right hand around the index finger of the left.
  • The Vardon grip is achieved with overlapping. The right pinkie finger fits between the left hand’s index and middle finger. This is probably the swing most commonly used.
  • The ten-finger or baseball grip is used by beginners, players with small hands, and those with joint pain. Lock the right pinkie finger close against the index finger of the left.

The correct stance

Take the proper stance, to improve your swing and avoid the embarrassment of missing the ball or spinning around with force that throws you off balance. The following tips will help you with your stance:

  • Align yourself as though your body and the tee box are on each size of a railroad track that runs in a straight shot from tee box to pin.
  • Place your feet shoulder-width apart and balance your weight on the balls of your feet.
  • Slightly flex your knees, keep your spine straight, and bend at the hips. Keep your body relaxed, not stiff.
  • Also relax your grip. Secure the club without gripping too tightly.

Perfect the swing

With the stance and grip covered, there is the more complicated matter of the golf swing. This is what it all comes down to. The following are foundational tips on a subject that easily demands its own volume:

On a two-part golf swing, first is the backswing during which your shoulders should pivot toward the spine while shifting your weight to the ball of your back foot and hinging your left arm to an L-shaped angle.

Secondly, on the downswing, smoothly and in one balanced movement, release the left arm from the 90-degree angle toward the target while shifting your weight to your front foot.

Much more can be said about improving your golf swing, and that’s why professional golf instructors have tremendous job security. Every golf lover knows it’s worth it to learn the disciplines of achieving an accurate golf swing. These foundational golfing tips can both set you on the right track and improve your language on the golf course.
